‘Zosimo Napolitano’ Violin, Italy, 1987

A modern Italian violin labelled ‘Zosimo Napolitano’, dated 1987 in Bagnacavallo. The back plate is of one piece of medium regularly flamed maple with the figure descending from left to right; the initials “Nz” branded on the button; the top plate of closely spaced reed lines; the orange brown varnish with the subtle marks left from hand tools adds to its overall character.

Zosimo Napolitano is not himself a recorded maker but his label indicates that he was a pupil of Giovanni Foschini in Bagnacavallo and the work clearly shows the guidance of a master so we suspect that he was not fully professional but one of the many dedicated amateur makers who have been captivated by the craft.

The violin is fitted up to our ‘Master’ level with Evah Pirazzi strings. An interesting Italian instrument that is playing well now and will undoubtably develop with further playing. This violin would suit the advanced or advancing student.
